I have the honour to acknowledge the re-

ceipt of your telegram of the 9th. instant to which I replied

on the 10th. idem, stating that Martin was dead.

I attach a report by Mr. Badeley the

Captain Superintendent of Police stating the circumstances.

This matter was not specially reported to me as it should

have been, and I regret to find that notwithstanding my orders,

issued as I informed you in my Despatch No. 372 of the 18th.

37/18 September, 1901, that the death of members of the force

should be reported to their relatives without a day's delay

the death of this man was not reported for eleven days

although two mails had left for home. In the meantime I have

called upon the Captain Superintendent of Police for explana-

tion.
